Workers Unite to Get What They're Owed

adamolsen

It has been a steep learning curve. We have had ongoing issues with the Phil Usher H20 site with a total disrespect to the workforce on the job in regards to their simple human rights.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland have identified three priorities for the construction industry in 2010-2011.  The largest increase in serious non-fatal workers compensation injuries have been injuries from falls from heights. Let me start off with saying how honoured I am to be in this position. It’s not a right that’s given; this position has to be earned.

We Fight. We Struggle - Winter 2010

Even though the level of work and jobs available is not where we would like it to be, a lot has still happened since our last journal. During this time I spent a week in North Queensland with our organiser John Lund. The trip was an eye-opener with the week starting in Cairns and finishing in Mackay. We visited many jobs by major builders such as Laing O’Rourke, Theiss, Hutchinson, Watpac, Bovis Lend Lease and Baulderstone. It amazes me at the difference in wages and safety conditions.

Bob Williams

After a slow start to the 2009/2010 trainee intake due to scarcity of work, I am pleased to report that since the last journal we have exceeded our target for the year and have already started signing trainees for the 2010/2011 intake.

I hope this journal finds you well and in good spirits. It has been a promising start to the year and it looks to be an even brighter finish, with some major work starting to ramp up and get underway.

Learning and Remembering - Winter 2010

The National Day of Mourning rally on the gold coast was an emotional one to say the least. Workers, some with their families gathered in the park for the service. They then marched through the streets to the spot Chris Gear and Steve Sayer fell to their deaths only two years ago. Chris’s wife Miriam put on a brave face and came to the service standing amongst workers who once worked by Chris’ side.

Builders Losing Their Way in North Queensland - Winter 2010

Just when I thought I’d seen it all... along comes the Watpac Job at the Detention Centre in Townsville. The mind boggles at the thought of what they are doing to workers conditions and take home pay on this site. Watpac have won this job as the better contract only because they have used less than what you would call a good subbie. In this case, a company called IIAS.

Union Pride - Winter 2010

Eddie Bland

It has been a busy few months. May Day was a great weekend and thanks to all the members and their families who came to the Sunshine Coast. I’d like to thank all who participated and we hope you had a fun day. The May Day Committee who are with the Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) are committed to bettering it every year. I’d like to make a special thanks to BLF delegate Pat Maher for cooking and serving all day.
