The Touch Footy competition this year surpassed all of our previous great efforts. The colour, the carnival atmosphere of “tent city” and the attitude of al the participating teams set the scene for the best day ever.
The Fathers’ Day theme was certainly to the fore with Mums scrambling everywhere after more kids than I’ve ever seen – while the Dads just kicked back.
When you have a charity day, no matter which way you look you are reminded of what the day is about. With everyone enjoying the event it tells something about the quality of us as people.
Tucked away to the side was a bungalow that Kids Under Cover – our preferred charity on the day – provides to families in need of supplementary accommodation for extended families.
Then there were four Pryme touch footy teams looking resplendent in pink. Not a reflection of their masculinity but in recognition of Pryme’s support for breast cancer research and support.
The mood of the day was reflected in the attitude of the players. All of them. Even as we got down to the business end fun and sportsmanship shone through.
So now for the footy results.
A few surprises in the early rounds but as the comp progressed a few sides stood out.
The biggest surprise was how easily Members Equity, big improvers over the last few years, succumbed to not-much pressure. Perhaps their minds were on the economic meltdown!
CSTC were another pedigree side which failed to live up to expectations. Never mind, there’s always next year.
JRS Jumpform Rigging and Scaffolding, a new team to the comp showed all the way through they had the goods, beating Oneform, Pryme 4, (who had knocked out CSTC) and then perennial dark horses QBuild. That got them to the Grand Final where they met Pryme 1.
Pryme 1 got through by touching up the two Leightons teams before meeting Anchor in the semi. Pryme 1 flexed their muscles here with a 6 – 1 victory. In a hotly contested Grand Final Pryme 1 prevailed 2 – 1.
Only one side gets to be the champion but this year every team really was a winner.
