BLF Trainees to the Rescue

After a recent and very unfortunate dog attack on one of our trainers CSTC were left in need of assistance in supervising a small concrete pour. As is so often the case the call for assistance was answered by our BLF members and this time it was one of the industries young up and comers, Cameron Rae.

Cameron has been employed as a trainee by Shepherd’s Contracting for a year and a half. In that time he has shown the company his mature and attentive nature which enables him to take on challenging tasks from time to time.

The pours were part of the practical component of the nine week Concreting and Steelfixing Pre vocational program which is currently running at CSTC. Cameron jumped at the chance to lend a hand but it is also a credit to his company for producing such an enthusiastic worker.

The pre vocational program is aimed at students and the unemployed wanting to experience life in the construction industry. Pre vocational students benefit from building a strong foundation before being given the opportunity to move on to a job within our building and construction industry.

The task required Cameron to act as supervisor for a concrete pour which he saw through to the finished product. During the practical activity Cameron gained valuable practical experience as well as taking charge of the job showing great leadership for the pre vocational students.

Cameron suggested he was more than happy to give his time to help out CSTC. “The added bonus is we’re gaining experience and learning important new skills as we go,” he said.

The pre vocational students took a lot away from the experience. “Doing the concreting steelfixing pre vocational course is great because you get to experience the work you would be doing if you choose construction as a career. It’s also really good to be able to go to college and learn from people who have had a career in the trade and find out about their experiences,” one trainee said.

CSTC’s trainers were equally impressed. “It was fantastic to see Cameron lending a hand to do something that’s rewarding and beneficial to his experience and to pre vocational students at the centre that need a little help. Seeing Cameron interact with the prevos, telling them stories from work was really a great benefit to the students,” the supervising trainer said.

Cameron should be commended on his leadership skills; he is an asset to CSTC and his company. Not only will the project help towards the completion of their training but Cameron has used his time and skills to do something worthwhile for CSTC and the industry as a whole.
