Training scholarships are progressing quite well at the start of 2010. We currently have 80 trainees undertaking Certificates Three in Scaffolding, Dogging, Rigging, Steel fixing, and Concreting. Our target is to have 100 trainees participating at any one time.
We are finding that in the current climate there isn’t enough work out there at this point to achieve this number. The sub-contractors are telling us they’re pricing plenty of work but the jobs just aren’t starting. Building approvals are also up according to the local councils. These are all indications we will see an improvement in the amount of jobs starting in the near future and this will hopefully enable us to increase our numbers.
At the start of the year all the employers who have been participating in the scheme were invited to a meeting at the CSTC to consult with officials, trainers and myself in regard to the content and delivery of the courses. I would like to thank those employers who took the time to attend these meetings and for the constructive input they gave. This consultative process will be entered into on an annual basis and I’m sure this process will be beneficial, not only to employers but also the trainees by keeping our courses relevant to the changes in the industry.
Enjoy the Easter break and let’s hope that the work picks up after that.
