The Builders Labourer’s Federation acknowledges with disgust the ever increasing rate of traumatic fatalities in the Australian Building and Construction Industry. In the financial year 2008-2009 there were 40 deaths.
Federal government statistics of fatalities in construction (not including deaths resulting from occupational illnesses, cancers, asbestosis ect, or from journey related accidents or in off-site industries) show that prior to the Building Industry Improvement Act and the activities of the ABBC, in the financial year 2003-2004 there were 19 construction related deaths.
The ABCC are continually influencing builders and site management to impede workers from speaking to their union. The ABCC is having an unacceptable impact on the Health and Safety of our industry.
• The fatality rate increased under the Building and improvement act and the ABCC in 2008-2009 to 40 deaths.
• The fatality rate continued to rise under the Building improvement act and the ABCC in 2007-2008 to 36 deaths.
• The fatality Rate increased under the Building improvement act and the ABCC in 2006-2007 to 32 deaths
• Introduction of the Building improvement Act and the ABCC fatality rate 2005-2006 was 28 deaths
• Prior to the Building improvement act and the ABCC the Fatality rate 2003-2004 was 19 deaths.
Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd must be appalled at this unacceptable fatality rate and the abuse of federal endorsed powers by the ABCC.
The ABCC enforcers have gathered evidence against Ark Tribe who is facing a strong possibility of imprisonment for failing to attend a compulsory interogation.
Not one Australian voted this government to power on the belief that workers should be imprisoned by exercising their democratic right to silence.
The Builders Labourers Federation pledges to continue to campaign to achieve safe building site and demands that the federal government sponsored ABCC be abolished.
Please spend the time to tell Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard what you think about this disgusting fatality rate and abuse of power under the watch of the Labor sponsored ABCC. Their office and contact details are below.
