SHAME THE SHAM

The national sham contracting campaign has certainly struck a chord with Queensland workers. They have had enough of rogue companies and the undercutting of wages.

GOVERNMENT SITES GUILTY

Well Comrades,
There has been plenty of action in the CBD since my last article with workers continuing to put pressure on builders and the State Government to meet our demands and rid the industry of sham contracting.

CONTRIBUTIONS & YOUR SUPER

Time is running out!
Each financial year you get the opportunity to make the most of the super contributions you and your employer pay, by taking advantage of a ‘contribution limit’ (set by the Government) which enables you to increase your super,  up to the limit,  without any tax penalty.

SHAM CONTRACTING

You’ve heard all about sham contracting,  here’s the facts and how you can identify it in your workplace.

BOSSES IN THE GUN ON JAN 1

January 1,  2012 sees the introduction of the new nationally harmonised workplace health and safety legislation,  which will impose a specific  duty on bosses (directors). This new obligation will see bosses jailed for up to three years and fined up to $600,000 for failing to demonstrate due diligence.

BIG NUMBERS FOR TRAINEES

The slow process for government and council approvals,  combined with the recent downturn in unit sales,  is slowing progress in our sector. Normally at this time of the financial year we have an oversubscribed intake of trainees and are waiting for the end of June to come around so we can enrol more.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

Broad Construction have shown a blatant disregard for worker safety on the $40 million Mt Sheridan Plaza site in Cairns. Workers at the site were required to work inside a 5m high water tank. Broad Construction failed to provide a Safe Work Method statement and did not have any evacuation plans in place.

SUNSHINE COAST LOOKING BRIGHT

Here we are again Comrades,
It’s nearly tax time and I can’t say it hasn’t been busy.
I won’t say much about the rally,  but it was great to see such a huge turn out of workers supporting their fellow workers who are being robbed, hurt and killed on the job.
